The wireless inflight entertainment revolution
Over the past 12 months there has been a revolution going on in the IFE world. It’s to do with the way content is delivered to the passenger.
More and more airlines are now streaming content wirelessly. Why? Because wireless IFE systems are cheaper, lower in weight and do away with the kilometres of wires that can make traditional embedded systems prone to failure. Passengers also love the convenience of being able to connect to an onboard server using their own devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablet devices.
The major suppliers of wireless IFE are currently Row 44, Gogo with their ‘Vision’ system and Lufthansa Systems who supply ‘BoardConnect’.
2011 has seen a significant move towards this new technology. In North America where the latest available technologies are usually adopted first, airlines such as American, Southwest, Virgin and Delta have already introduced on-board wireless IFE, with passengers able to pay to watch movies, TV shows and other content.
Further afield, other airlines are trialling wireless or have made public statements that they are keen to move to this new technology. Wireless IFE it seems, is here to stay.
